Women in Mental Health & Therapy 1:15 pm - 2:00 pm
As society focuses more on mental health awareness, women are embracing methods of self-care and constructing boundaries around their professional and personal lives. As women are statistically more likely to experience depression and anxiety, not to mention increased societal expectations, seeking treatment via therapy is a means of focusing on our own well-being and identifying accessible mental health resources. Our panelists include counselors and a Marriage and Family Therapy 橙子视频 student, here to answer your questions about the benefits of mental health counseling and the opportunities for women in this career space.

Dr. Lawrencia Jenkins Cheyenne Evans Kasey Witherington, M.Ed., LPC

Dr. Lawrencia Jenkins

Dr. Lawrencia Jenkins, PhD, LPC, PLMFT, AAMFT-SC, is a proud Monroe, Louisiana native and graduate of Wossman High School. She earned her Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Psychology from the University of Louisiana Monroe (橙子视频) in 2015. Dr. Jenkins continued her education at 橙子视频, receiving her Master of Arts (MA) in Marriage and Family Therapy in 2017 and completing her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Marriage and Family Therapy in 2024.听

Currently, Dr. Jenkins is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Provisional Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and an AAMFT Approved Supervisor Candidate. She is trained in EMDR, TF-CBT, MST, and TBRI therapeutic modalities. Her areas of expertise include trauma-informed care, racial and historical trauma, perinatal mental health, military children and families, and relationship conflict. Dr. Jenkins's research focuses on increasing community awareness of mental health among African American populations, applying narrative therapy to trauma-informed care, and utilizing family systems theories within minority communities.

Dr. Jenkins has earned numerous awards and accolades in her field, including being an AAMFT Minority Fellow (2018鈥2020), an IAMFC Emerging Leader (2018), and a recipient of the United Health Foundation Diversity in Healthcare Scholarship in 2023. Since 2015, Dr. Jenkins has provided therapeutic services to marginalized families, youths, and adolescents in various roles, including as a student support services therapist, supervised visitation monitor, and as an in-home and community-based therapist in Northeast Louisiana. She currently works as a clinician for a local private practice and serves as an adjunct professor at two universities.

Cheyenne Evans

Cheyenne Evans is a second-year master鈥檚 student in Marriage and Family Therapy at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. She will graduate in May 2025 and plans to continue her professional development in 橙子视频鈥檚 MFT doctoral program. Inspired by the program鈥檚 focus on how family and social systems impact mental health, Cheyenne is committed to making therapeutic services inclusive and accessible to the Northeast Louisiana community.

Cheyenne earned her B.A. in Speech Communication from the University of Louisiana at Monroe, her M.A. in English from Texas State University, and her Ph.D. in English from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Such varied educational and life experiences inform Cheyenne鈥檚 practice as a growth-oriented therapist. She believes everyone can benefit from using therapy to explore their own lived experiences, foster behavioral insight and emotional understanding, and improve communication and conflict management skills.

As an intern at the 橙子视频 Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic and at Finding Solace in West Monroe, Cheyenne provides therapy services to individuals, couples, families, and groups, focusing on relationships, trauma, grief, and gender and sexuality. Her goal is to meet clients where they are with curiosity and creativity and to provide safety and security while guiding them through life transitions, and to cultivate resilience and resources within themselves.

Kasey Witherington, M.Ed., LPC

Kasey Witherington received her B.A. in teaching in 1996 and later began working in 1997 as a second and third-grade teacher in the Ouachita Parish School System. Kasey continued her work for six years in public school, until 2003, when she began working at Grace Episcopal School. While working at Grace, Kasey finished her master's in counseling (M.Ed., School and Community Counseling)听 and took a job with River Oaks School as a junior high and high school counselor. After completing her license as a clinical licensed counselor, she left River Oaks and pursued her career as a mental health counselor for Affinity Behavioral Health, Delhi Hospital, Ouachita Parish School System, and Healthpoint Center. After much prayer and consideration for work/home balance, Kasey created her business, Kasey Witherington Counseling, LLC, in 2022 and began working in private practice.听 Kasey Witherington Counseling, LLC,听 opened in Tower Place two and a half years ago where she currently sees children and adults with mental health or life struggles.听

Kasey feels blessed to be able to help patients struggling with mental health issues. She thanks God daily for her talents and the challenges she has overcome to be where she is in life. She was honored to win an award in 2017 as听 鈥淏est Counselor鈥澨 through 鈥淗eroes for Patients鈥 and again in 2024 as a 鈥淏uzz Award Finalist鈥 in Bayou Life Magazine.听 However, her greatest 鈥渁wards鈥 are her husband of twenty-nine听 years (which she met and started dating at sixteen), and her three children- John Collin (24), Luke(20), and Sarah Beth (18).听

As 橙子视频 has evolved as the health sciences hub of northeast Louisiana, recently opening the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program, many women students are showing interest in Allied Sciences - most notably physical therapy and occupational therapy. Physical therapy is an appealing career choice due to its practitioners' direct involvement in helping people heal and transform their lives. Likewise, careers in occupational therapy allow professionals to help others gain independence through relearning common, everyday tasks - improving quality of life for fellow citizens. Both occupations share the benefits of witnessing immediate impacts on patients and increased interaction with one鈥檚 community. Our panelists come from both disciplines and will share their insights on these hands-on career paths.

Dr. Lisa Van Hoose听

Dr. Lisa VanHoose, PT, PhD, MPH, FAPTA, FAAPT, is a trailblazing physical therapist, educator, and researcher whose work has transformed the fields of oncologic rehabilitation and health equity. As a Professor and Program Director in the Physical Therapy Department at the University of Louisiana Monroe, Dr. VanHoose is not just shaping future healthcare leaders鈥攕he is leading the charge for change.

Dr. VanHoose鈥檚 academic journey is a testament to her relentless pursuit of excellence. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Health Science and Master of Science in Physical Therapy from the University of Central Arkansas before advancing to a PhD in Rehabilitation Science and a Master of Public Health from the University of Kansas Medical Center. Her expertise was honed through prestigious fellowships, including at the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute PRIDE Summer Institute in Cardiovascular Genetic Epidemiology, and the Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women鈥檚 Health (BIRCWH) program.

Since 1996, Dr. VanHoose has been a leader in oncologic physical therapy as a Board-Certified Clinical Specialist. Her groundbreaking research, funded by NIH, PCORI, and industry grants, explores the complex challenges faced by racial and ethnic minority and rural cancer survivors. As the Founder and CEO of the Ujima Institute, she collaborates with under-resourced communities, turning advocacy into tangible transformation.

Dr. VanHoose鈥檚 dedication to inclusive excellence has earned her numerous accolades, including the APTA Societal Impact Award in 2021 and induction as a Fellow of both the American Physical Therapy Association and the American Academy of Physical Therapy. Her legacy is defined by a steadfast commitment to dismantling barriers to equitable healthcare and creating movement-friendly environments for all. Dr. VanHoose inspires others to dream, persevere, and lead with purpose, leaving an indelible mark on the world.听

Mary Margaret Hildebrand

Mary Margaret Hildebrand, a Louisiana native, was born and raised in Monroe. She earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology from Louisiana Tech University before pursuing her passion for Occupational Therapy at the University of Louisiana at Monroe (橙子视频). Her career began working with children in outpatient clinics. After earning her Master鈥檚 degree, she returned to 橙子视频 to share her knowledge and skills as an instructor in the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program. Currently, Mary Margaret serves children within the Ouachita Parish School System. Deeply committed to her faith, she is an active member of the Jesus the Good Shepherd Church, where she volunteers her time in various capacities. Mary Margaret has been married to her husband Michael for eight years and they are the proud parents of their one son, Thomas, and are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their second child this August.听



Stacey Majure

Stacey Majure is a dedicated Physical Therapist and the owner of MPOWER Physio &听 Wellness, which she founded in early 2024.听 Her mission is to empower and support women鈥檚 health through exceptional patient care.听 Stacey鈥檚 career began in 2009, where she developed a love for outpatient orthopedics.听 However, her passion shifted in 2011 after attending a pelvic health continuing education course. This experience ignited her interest in pelvic health, an area often lacking in education and resources for women, and changed the trajectory of her career. MPOWER Physio & Wellness was established to empower women in the community by providing awareness, education, and treatment for the musculoskeletal changes that occur throughout a woman's life. In addition to her practice, Stacey serves as an adjunct faculty member at 橙子视频鈥檚 Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) school, where she shares her expertise and passion with future physical therapists.

Stacey earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology from Louisiana State University and received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from The University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences in St. Augustine, FL.听 She holds certifications in pelvic floor therapy, manual therapy, and dry needling.听 After completing her education, Stacey returned to her beloved hometown of West Monroe, where she resides with her husband John and their three children, John Wallace, Anders, and Merritt.听 She is a member of North Monroe Baptist Church, serving in the children鈥檚 ministry alongside her husband.听 Her spare time is often spent running between school, ball games, and dance, but quality time with family 鈥 preferably at the lake 鈥 is her priority. She is grateful for the support of female mentors and friends who enable her to empower other women to thrive at any stage of life.

For women in medicine, a rapidly changing healthcare environment means contending with practitioner burnout, patient frustration, insurance roadblocks, and public questioning of medical research. Practitioners are battling a crisis of confidence from patients paired with soaring

healthcare costs. And yet at the root of medicine is a practitioner鈥檚 commitment to healing and protecting the public, a noble endeavor and a much-needed public service. Whether you are considering a career in medicine or pondering a career change, our panel of professionals are here to share their experiences in providing healthcare and in healthcare administration.

Dr. Sarah Gregory is a Monroe native who graduated from Louisiana State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 2007. She completed her studies in New Orleans at LSU School of Dentistry in 2011. In 2018, she opened Southern Roots Dental with her dear friend Dr. Julie Simpson. Together with their rockstar dental team of all women, they have worked relentlessly to create a space for patients to feel welcomed and comfortable; of which, some may perceive as an impossible task for a dental office. Dr. Sarah Gregory is married to Dr. Nicholas Gregory. They have three energetic and entertaining daughters Lillian, Eliza and Hazel. She enjoys adventuring with her family, hiking, camping and surfing the Ouachita River.听


                     

Kandice Hunter Sanders

Kandice Hunter Sanders is a proud native of Monroe, Louisiana, and she is deeply passionate about educating her community on achieving and maintaining good health.听

She graduated from the University of Louisiana Monroe with multiple degrees: a Bachelor of Science in Health Studies, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and a Master of Science in Nursing with a concentration in Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner. Additionally, she obtained her Post-Master's Certificate in Family Nurse Practitioner from Southeastern Louisiana University.

Kandice is a dual-certified nurse practitioner and team lead advanced practice provider at Ochsner LSU Health Monroe. She specializes in palliative care, providing crucial support to patients and their families who are dealing with severe, life-limiting illnesses. Kandice assists them in navigating the complexities of end-of-life care.

Kandice's professional journey showcases her exceptional dedication and leadership in the healthcare field. She always seeks opportunities to promote healthcare education and preventive measures, highlighting her commitment to improving community health.

Outside of her professional endeavors, Kandice enjoys spending quality time with her husband, Dr. Bret Sanders, family, friends, and their two adorable Yorkies, Bruno and Jax.

Mandi Sills Hart

Mandi Sills Hart is a dynamic and passionate healthcare executive, entrepreneur, and community leader dedicated to making a difference in her family, profession, and community. With over a decade of experience as a Registered Nurse, Mandi spent seven transformative years managing the Labor & Delivery Unit at Minden Medical Center, leading it to become the first Baby-Friendly Perinatal Unit in North Louisiana.

In her current role as the Corporate Director of Emergency and Hospital Medicine Services for Allegiance Health Management, Mandi ensures that rural communities across Louisiana receive high-quality emergency care during their most critical moments. Her leadership and strategic vision continue to strengthen healthcare access in underserved regions.

Beyond healthcare, Mandi is a devoted wife to Donny and a proud mother of 14-year-old triplets, Maddox, Mason, and Harleigh. Together, they reside in Minden, Louisiana, where Mandi serves as the Immediate Past Chair of the Greater Minden Chamber executive board. Inspired by her time with the chamber and her desire to bring joy to families in her community, Mandi and her husband opened Shug鈥檚 Minden, a charming ice cream shop in historic downtown Minden that quickly became a favorite destination for locals and visitors alike.

Mandi holds a Master鈥檚 in Business Administration from Louisiana State University Shreveport, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Louisiana at Monroe, and a Bachelor of Science in Family and Child Studies from Louisiana Tech University. Her commitment to excellence and community impact has earned her prestigious accolades, including Blue Cross and Blue Shield鈥檚 Angel Award Finalist, Nurse Manager of the Year, Employee of the Year, Webster Parish鈥檚 Top 15 Under 40, graduate of Leadership Webster, and a 2024 graduate of Leadership Louisiana.

With her unwavering dedication to improving lives through healthcare and community engagement, Mandi continues to inspire those around her to strive for excellence and serve with purpose.
